The winter season in the Appalachian Region is known for its beautiful snow-swept peaks. Ski lodges and Tweetsie Christmas bring tourism into the High Country. However, there is more to this season besides these well-known activities.
On December 5th at 5–7pm, the Special Collections Research Center will be hosting a pop-up on the first floor of Belk Library as part of the Library Cares, which is a series of library-sponsored activities and snack breaks designed to help students navigate the sometimes stressful period during exam week. Special Collection’s pop-up exhibit will contain a wide array of collections from the rare books and archives, such as:
- an illustrated Christmas card from the S. G. S. Poetry and Papers 1933–1949,
- a selection of photos from the Jack Jeffers Photography Collection,
- A 1960s Ski Queen Application from the Appalachian Cultural Museum Record
- an 1848 facsimile reproduction of “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement C. Moore
- And many more selections

The pop-up was curated by Mandi Burnison and Kari Salisbury. Publicity for the exhibit has been produced by Kate Stranathan and Liv Winnicki. All four students are reference assistants in Special Collections Research Center.
Mark your calendars to learn more about the activities of winter in the past in Appalachia.
Please join us for the pop-up on December 5th.
